documento | Translation of the FIFA – WHO ‘Pass the Message: Five Steps to Kicking Out Coronavirus’ into Sabah’s Indigenous Languages

  • 8 sets of posters from the original posters from the FIFA-WHO 'Pass the Message: Five Steps to Kicking out Coronavirus'
campaign translated into eight indigenous languages of Sabah, Malaysia. The translation project was carried out by the
Languages & Linguistics Cluster of the Borneo Research Institute for Indigenous Studies (BorIIS) of Universiti Malaysia
Sabah together with FIFA, FAM, and the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Sabah). Permission to translate the posters was provided by FIFA and WHO, and FAM Malaysia assisted with the design and editing of the posters. SIL assisted in reaching indigenous language speakers as the translators. The sets of posters were then uploaded to the university's website and other social media accounts as well as to the indigenous communities via the WhatsApp platform. Each set contains 6 posters and the languages are: Kadazandusun, Bajau, Dusun, Kadazan, Kimaragang, Murut, Rungus, and Tobilung. The posters have been added onto several sites dedicated to disseminating information about COVID-19 to speakers of indigenous, endangered, and under-resourced languages (https://endangeredlanguagesproject.github.io/COVID-19/)
as well as on the Asia-Pacific Multilingual Education website for similar language resources. The URL for the asiapacificmle is https://asiapacificmle.net/covid-19/view?id=51 .
