Postgraduate Linguistics Symposium

2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Linguistics students at the University of Adelaide would like to mark this by inviting fellow students, staff, researchers and interested others to join us in a Post Graduate Linguistics Symposium. We will be discussing a broad range of topics related to this theme from around the world. This will be a full day event with tea/coffee and a light lunch provided - if you have dietary requirements, please note this where requested in your booking. Késhjéé’: The Navajo Shoe Game

Késhjéé’ is only played in the winter after the first freeze of the year has occurred. At this event, Mr. Kevin Belin will teach késhjéé’ protocols, tell historical stories, and the audience will learn to sing késhjéé’ songs and play késhjéé’. Késhjéé’ or the Shoe Game originated due to the disagreement of how long the day or night should last. The first game ended in a draw and as a result today we have both day and night. Késhjéé’ is more than a story, it is a teaching tool for everyone.

Our instructors will share their personal experiences and stories, incorporating traditional cultural knowledge and protocol, and discussing the use of Navajo language in one's career. Our primary goal is to promote the continued use of the Navajo language and of all Indigenous languages of the Southwest.

LT4All – International Conference on Language Technologies for All: Enabling Linguistic Diversity and Multilingualism Worldwide

With a view to provide access to information and knowledge to all language users and facilitate their inclusion and participation in building sustainable knowledge societies, UNESCO, in close cooperation with the Government of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Ugra (Russian Federation), the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) and its Special Interest Group on Under-resourced languages (SIGUL), and in partnership with UNESCO Intergovernmental Information for All Programme (IFAP) and the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre, as well as with support of other public organizations and sponsors, is organizing this conference with the title “Language Technologies for All: Enabling Linguistic Diversity and Multilingualism Worldwide” at its Headquarters in Paris, France from 4 to 6 December 2019.
