2019 Native American Critical Issues Conference
This conference has been an annual event for over 40 years in the State of Michigan. This years theme: Kchi piitendaakwat Nesewin (Air – The Sacred Breath of Life) We originate from the sacred breath of the Creator, an expression of the first thought. As we breathe in the smoke from the pipe and exhale, our prayers are carried on eagle feathers as they fly into the air and touch the rest of creation. Our Native languages carry our cultural values and traditions from generations to generation. As Indigenous Peoples, we have a responsibility to revitalize Native languages and protect Mother Earth so future generations will be able to hear and understand the voices of our ancestors. It is our duty to help heal the wounds caused by humans including those that have damaged the sky world. Our thoughts, narratives and our practices in traditional and scientific endeavors should be aligned with this theme to restore Mother Earth in order to provide for future generations. Kina gwaaya nendwendan Nesewin (Everybody needs air) Kina gego maadziimgad nji Nesewin (Everything is alive on account of air) Naakdoowendandas Nesewin (Let’s take care of Air).
