Genner Llanes Ortiz: Digital activism in cultural and linguistic revitalization
The use of digital tools to record and promote
indigenous languages in Latin America has increased in
the last two decades. Indigenous groups and individuals
are harnessing the low cost and interactivity of online
platforms to express their identities and show the world
how rich and sophisticated their languages are. Examples
of these uses are for example the creation of blogs,
video channels, online communities, translation of
popular sites, like Wikipedia, and creation of apps.
In his talk, Dr. Genner Llanes Ortiz (Centre for
Indigenous America Studies, Leiden University) will
introduce some of the most interesting examples based on
a study that he coordinated into the practices of a
small sample of indigenous groups and individuals from
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru,
Bolivia, Chile and Paraguay.
