Bridging the language gap with technology

Whether in personal interactions, between communities or on a global level – we all deal with communication barriers. This presentation provides an overview of the topic of “small” languages (indigenous, minority, endangered and minoritised languages) and showcases a range of technological solutions that have been proposed with the goal of bridging the language gap.

Dr  Tabea De Wille  is the director of the Localisation Research Centre at the University of Limerick and lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems.

Potential role of Social Media when learning a minority language

Multiple examples from ongoing research studies indicate how the use of Social Media can enhance language learning (Lamy & Zorou, 2013). Platforms such as Facebook may be a clear example on how Social Media enhance language learning as they prompt interaction between users, benefit relationship building and establish a sense of belonging (Kabilan, et al., 2010). On these grounds, this talk will present results of a comparative study of a Facebook Irish group Gaeilge Amháin and a Facebook Spanish group Español Intermedio Avanzado to show evidence of how digital platforms may support communities of practices among language learners of a minority and a global language. Data related to the interactions, the roles of the participants and the aims of the users partaking in the Facebook group will be analysed, compared and discussed.

Dr Marta Giralt  is a lecturer in Spanish and Applied Linguistics at the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics in University of Limerick. Her research areas include CALL, Intercultural Communication and SLA. As a native Catalan speaker, she has a special interest in minority languages.

The role of social media fandom communities in language promotion: The case of Celtic Noir

Twitter has become a popular platform for fandom engagement, both among fans and with content creators. While a considerable amount of research has been done regarding the fans of television media in majority languages (Wood and Baughman, 2012), there has been notably less work done for media in minority languages (see Moriarty, 2015). The emergence of online fandom communities for Celtic Noir television shows lend themselves to insights regarding not only language policy and media policies for the Irish language, but also community engagement on a global scale.

Maggie Bonsey  is a 4th year PhD candidate in the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics, at the University of Limerick. Her work examines the Twitter communities that have emerged in response to three Irish-language dramas on TG4, through a lens of language policy and audience design.

Bláthú  (Flourishing): Making links between Irish language learning and well-being in Limerick

The design, implementation and outcomes of an Irish language support intervention involving parents, children, a Home School Community Liaison Coordinator, and community and university research partners are discussed in this presentation.  Connections are made between two current UNESCO initiatives:  UNESCO chair in Community-Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education (Knowledge for Change) and UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages 2019.

Dr  Deirdre Ní Loingsigh  is  Stiúrthóir na Gaeilge , Director of  Aonad na Gaeilge  (Irish Language Centre) at the University of Limerick and lecturer in the School of English, Irish, and Communication.

Déanfar sonraí a bhaineann leis na hidirghníomhaíochtaí, róil na rannpháirtithe agus aidhmeanna na n-úsáideoirí a ghlacann páirt sa ghrúpa Facebook a anailísiú, a chur i gcomparáid agus a phlé.

Cé go bhfuil go leor taighde déanta maidir le lucht leanúna na meán teilifíse i dteangacha tromlaigh (Wood agus Baughman, 2012), tá níos lú oibre déanta ar na meáin i dteangacha mionlaigh (féach Moriarty, 2015). Tugann teacht chun cinn pobal díograiseach ar líne le haghaidh seónna teilifíse Celtic Noir léargas, ní hamháin ar pholasaí teanga agus polasaithe meán don Ghaeilge, ach ar rannpháirtíocht an phobail ar scála domhanda.
