Miawipuk Wi’kapaltimk (Mid Winter Feast)
The Eskasoni Firsts Nation is one of the last remaining communities in Eastern Canada where the Indigenous Language is spoken. I am a part of the Eskasoni Mi’kmaq language Initiative(EMLI). We have a group of Mi’kmaq speakers that get together on a weekly basis and look at various ways in which we can promote the language. This year we are having our mid winter feast and we decided to create some awareness for the 2019 Internation Year of Indigenous languages. We will also have Mi’kmaq entertainers at the Feb 19th event to promote the language through music. We will also promote the language through the launching if the grand chief book. We will also be showing our community the current state of the language and what we need to do to revitalize it.
