Sacred Sounds: The Legacy of Anishinaabemowin
Sacred Sounds: The Legacy of Anishinaabemowin is a three component, public awareness campaign promoting cultural literacy in Indigenous languages, tailored to Winnipeg and nearby reserve communities. Anishinaabemowin is a family of Indigenous languages in central Canada. In addition to our focus on Anishinaabemowin, Urban Shaman will be working with Ojibwe, Cree, Dene, Dakota, Michif, Inuktitut and Ojibwe-Cree. While we will offer translations in multiple languages through our promotional materials, our focus in our programming specific to Sacred Sounds will be on Anishinaabemowin-engaged cultural workers and artists. We will recognize the accumulated work of the past fifty years in individual and collective efforts to maintain and strengthen languages that have been undertaken by Indigenous activists, linguists and educators in absence of federal legislative recognition. The three components of this project are: 1) translation of programming and publicity materials, 2) a celebration gathering, and, 3) an art exhibit with an accompanying publication. To unveil our public awareness campaign, panels and performances programmed with the celebration gathering will promote the opening of the exhibition. We will invite the local public, educators, students, and outreach with local Aboriginal service organizations to participate in the gathering.
